Die fantasieën gaan hem steeds meer bezig houden. En in september 1897 is hij er vrij zeker van dat seksuele ervaringen in de vroege jeugd voor het grootste deel gefantaseerd zijn. In oktober 1897 komt dan het Oedipuscomplex om de hoek kijken.
[Masson ideeën zijn dus zwaar overdreven. Freud 'heeft' niet eerst een 'verleidingstheorie' die hij later om dubbelzinnige redenen laat vallen. Freud speelt in zijn onderzoek met mogelijkheden, waaronder die van incest en misbruik in de vroege jeugd. Hij denkt een tijdje dat het dat is, maar heeft al die tijd ook twijfels, uiteindelijk komt hij dan op het idee van dat de meeste kinderen fantaseren over die seks en verklaart dat weer een stuk later met een theorie over het Oedipuscompex. Mij lijkt dat een heel begrijpelijk proces.]
